Elden “Fatty” Nelson of the Fat Cyclist blog, has posted the news of his wife Susan’s death due to metastatic breast cancer last night. The Nelsons’ fight with cancer has been well documented on the internet thanks to the writing of “Fatty” and the support of his many, many friends. Through his blog, “The Fat Cyclist”, over $500.000.00 dollars has been raised in the fight to whip cancer.

Their story was compelling and, at the same time, typical of what families fighting cancer must face. Their day-to-day struggles and, in particular, Elden’s willingness to share his own journey provided a glimpse into what is both a painful and a loving process. Susan and Elden’s fight galvanized the biking culture into action and helped bring more attention to the much needed funding to continue this fight.

You may find more information on their inspirational journey by visiting their site (The Fat Cyclist). You may also read Kent Peterson’s tribute at Kent’s Bike Blog. If you wish to help Fatty continue the fight against cancer, you may make a donation to the LiveStrong Foundation in Susan Nelson’s memory at the LiveStrong Foundation website. (P.S. Elden posted the following donation information after I published the LiveStrong Foundation info. “In lieu of flowers, please donate via Paypal or send donations to Elden Nelson, 407 Quincy Ct., Alpine, UT 84004. Donations will be used for the Nelson children’s education funds.”)

May peace and strength be with the Nelson family and all families struggling with this disease..
